Garden pavilion gazebos and arches play a vital role in giving support and adding elegance to your garden.
There are different types of garden pergolas and arches which are widely used in today’s world.
Garden Pergolas and arches have been used for a long time in garden design for the purpose of providing support in the vertical segment. These have been useful to provide shade in the areas which are exclusively set for relaxation. If the pergolas are covered by climbing plants they can provide cool atmosphere in shaded paths and entrances.
Uses of garden pergolas and arches
Framing entrances
The arches have been used extensively for forming entrances in the past. In the initial stages the arches in the garden were made of brick or wrought iron and were mainly used to link the two areas. It has only been a couple of decades that arches were designed and framed with plants, shrubs and creepers.
Structures for shade
A garden pergola is usually like a series of arches which are bonded together to form a simple framework. These are usually made of wooden posts and beams and are mainly used to help the climbing plants or creepers.
It is interesting to know that the construction of the original garden gazebo dates back to the ancient times of the Egyptians. At that time also theses structures were used as means to support grapes which resulted in providing good areas of shade. These pergolas were built in the entire region of the Middle East with pillars of stone to provide strength. It was from here that the garden pergolas move to other type of regions where they were presented with ornamentation. Rounded poles were used as crossbeams which replaced the square poles which did not let the water stay over them.
Covered walkways
The garden pergolas are used to cover the walkways along with the arbors. The arbors are enclosed on three sides and are somewhat smaller than the garden pergolas. In the past arbour were shady tunnels which were made by training the trees to make them grow over the metal arches in order to form a thick net. This growth of trees on the metal arches changed the atmosphere. These days the trees and climbers are trained to grow over the archways made of wood to create a great atmosphere.
These are some of the uses of the garden pergolas and arches.
